FAQs

Do I need a referral?

No! While I welcome doctors’ referrals (medicare rebates are not available), you do not need one to come see me. Simply call/text/email or book via the online portal.

How long does it take to get an appointment?

I can usually see you within a few days to a week. I do offer after-hours appointments as well but they fill up fast and sometimes are not available. Please enquire with me.

How long are counselling sessions?

For individuals, sessions are 1 hour. For couples, sessions are 90 minutes.

How many sessions will I need?

This is a hard question to answer, as everyone’s circumstances are different. Simply, there is no right or wrong amount of sessions. Some people may only desire or need one or two to gain clarity on an issue that is bothering them, while others will benefit from regular sessions for long-standing or ongoing concerns. It really depends on what your circumstances are, and what your goals are. I will check in with you regularly during sessions to see how you feel you are progressing and if you need more or less.

What does “Confidentiality” mean and what are the limits?

Confidentiality means that the information you bring to me remains private (except in some circumstances). There are limits to keeping things you tell me in confidence due to Australian laws.

If you’d like to see my Terms and Conditions of Treatment and the Confidentiality requirements, please read these as part of my client Welcome Pack here.

How does phone/online counselling work?

Most people find that phone or online counselling (I offer sessions via secure Zoom links) are just as effective as meeting in person. This can also be more convenient to you if you live remotely, or can’t afford travel expenses. Simply book your appointment as normal, and I will connect with you via phone or Zoom at the appointed time.

Do you offer face-to-face sessions?

Yes! I offer face-to-face sessions in Maleny, Sunshine Coast Hinterland (QLD).

Are these sessions covered by Medicare rebates?

Counsellors and psychotherapists are currently not included in the Better Access to Mental Health Care model. Therefore, I am unable to provide Medicare rebates, but this can also have its benefits. You do not need a diagnosed mental illness to come see me, and as such you do not need a GP referral. You are also not limited to a certain number of sessions and we can set more individualised goals for your therapy. Another benefit includes, not having a recorded mental health diagnosis on your health record and your privacy is assured.

I am passionate about getting counsellors onto the Medicare rebates scheme, and am advocating strongly with my peak registration body (Australian Counsellor’s Association) to help make mental health care more affordable and accessible to everyone.
